A Shot of Athleisure Inspiration
We’ve all seen it: the sidewalk sneaker-kid invasion that has slowly crept onto nearly every blog and fashion magazine page in the world. It sparked fires under bloggers’ bottoms in 2014, was paraded on the runways of Chanel, and was heralded as ‘normcore’ in 2015, so what will become of ‘atheleisure’ or athletic fashion this year? And just how do you take something that is dripping in cool and merge it with your existing, everyday wardrobe? Luckily, I have the answers (you’re welcome).
Here are some helpful hints from yours truly on how to wear this trend without looking like Sporty Spice gone horribly wrong.
Back To Basics
Stick to neutrals if you’re not sure on the style. There are so many great sneakers out there; in millions of patterns and textures. But if you’re easing into it, then there’s nothing wrong with a neutral colour palette.
Think black, white, grey, navy and cream. Investing in these tones also creates longevity and versatility.
Proportions, proportions, proportions
The length and volume of your pieces are key when avoiding that frumpy old lady look and instead nailing the ‘That Girl‘ style so many of us have seen and loved. Keep your bottoms wider and just below the knee, and your top piece more fitted. Or switch it around.
If you are lucky enough to live somewhere that actually has a winter and not a week of chilly mornings (I’m looking at you, Hong Kong), then – if you’re feeling adventurous – feel free to throw on a box coat or bomber jacket in dusty pink or baby blue, otherwise refer to Tip #1.
Don’t Sweat It
This is a trend that evokes comfort and a casual approach to dressing so RELAX. Calm down, you’ve got this!
All you have to do is try. Remember that this is fashion and it should be about you feeling fabulous. Have some fun.
If Britney Spears can shoot an entire music video for Baby One More Time in her sports bra and sweat pants, you can wear sneakers and a bomber jacket.
On your marks, get set… GO!
