Socialito – new Mexican on Wyndham

It’s hard to believe that just a few months ago we were lamenting the lack of good Mexican food in Hong Kong. Now it seems that every restaurant is jumping on the taco bandwagon and the latest addition to the salsa infused scene is Buzz Concepts’ Socialito. Impossible to miss right in the middle of Wyndham Street, Sassy were straight in the door for a tester lunch as soon as it opened!

The concept has three tiers; canteen style casual food on the street side, more formal restaurant indoors, a buzzing nightclub after-hours. Currently only tier one is operational as they apply the finishing touches to the interior. You can pull up a bar stool, perch in their authentic (this was verified by the Mexican I dined with!) feeling metal encased front and sip on the most delicious beer ever: a Michelada – a beer mixed with lime juice and chilli salt.

The vibe is definitely bang on but Socialito is still very much in its infancy; service needs a lot of work and the ceviche and guacamole we ordered were just so-so. You can see the potential and the quirkiness in the presentation but the flavours aren’t quite there yet. Reports are that the pulled pork tacos are spot on though so be sure to give them a try.

We’re sure that in time this new Mexican hotspot will be on par with Brickhouse and I’m sure until then it will still be heaving with people desperate to put their tacos to the test. Whatever you do; don’t forget to try the Michelada!
