Time for an upgrade?
When it comes to skincare, there are two kinds of people in the world: the ones who love to rock up to drugstores and Sephora in hopes of striking gold on a new skincare product they haven’t tried, or the ones who’ve stuck to the same regimen for years. And while it’s taken me years to perfect my skincare regimen — including what exactly I need to get done routinely at the dermatologist — I’m not going to throw you into the deep end of a skincare masterclass. Instead, here are some ways you can shake up your skincare regimen for the better.
Add a Serum
If you’ve been religiously using a moisturiser, good on ya. If you haven’t, time to pick one up, plus a serum. We’ve delved deep into the world of serums, but why use one? Serums boast the smallest molecule size in the whole skincare gamut — this means that active ingredients that will help resolve your skincare woes are going to penetrate deep into your skin instead of just staying on the surface which is what moisturisers tend to do. While helping the surface of the skin is good, you want healing and regenerating to occur from inside, out!
Not all serums have to cost a pretty penny. I’m obsessed with The Ordinary that you can pick up from ASOS or Beautylish. Try their Squalane serum for intense hydration for the coming cooler months!
Sleep in a Mask
I’m all about embracing the multitasking life, especially when it comes to skincare and while there’s a lot to be said about traditional wash-off masks that help you get rid of the grime on your face, sleep-in masks should be part of your regimen too. Stem cells in the epidermis reproduce mainly at night, according to the body’s natural circadian rhythm; the stem cells create new skin cells that replace aged cells and reduce the appearance of aging. Therefore, the best time to nourish your skin to tackle your ailments is when you sleep. Slap on a mask — I love Skin Inc’s Pure Deepsea Hydrating Mask — that brightens and intensively hydrates your skin while you sleep. You wake up with a dewy glow!
Step Up the Anti-Aging
The truth is, once you turn 20, the dermis layer produces 1% less collagen every year, and factors like smoking and excessive sun exposure will increase that number by a whole lot more. Whether you’ve already started noticing fine lines, and lack of elasticity or not, there’s no such thing as stepping up the anti-aging regimen too early.
While peels tend to usually leave you red-faced and prone to post-facial breakouts, Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial formulated with 25% AHAs (made up of glycolic, tartaric, lactic, and citric acids) and 2% BHAs (salicylic acid) is tough enough to slough off dead skin cells and to help resurface the texture of your skin. It is also made with antioxidant-packed ingredients like soothing matcha tea, vitamin C-spiked apple, and redness-fighting niacinamide to brighten and help fight off free radicals. You get the perfect cocktail of a peel that’s potent but gentle to the skin.
