From Butter’s nostalgic Funfetti cake to Hole Foods’ moreish donut holes, US-style desserts are for the extreme sugar fiends among us…
While Hongkongers can’t get enough of dainty pastries, layered textures and subtle Asian flavours like matcha and sesame when it comes to desserts, sometimes that just doesn’t cut it when you’re seeking a serious sugar fix. Nothing transports you to the childhood joy of birthday party sugar highs quite like American cakes, cookies and doughnuts. These are the Hong Kong cakeries who do it best.

Butter – The OG American Bake Shop
Not for the fainthearted, Butter cakes are at the extreme end of the sugar spectrum, and perhaps most authentically American at that! While the triple chocolate cake may be borderline cloying for some with its intense icing-to-cake ratio, we can’t look past its Funfetti cake which is like a birthday party in a bite. They have also launched lighter creations like lemon Raspberry Poppyseed Bundt cake and Coconut Chiffon cake which are perfect for the end of summer.

Vission Nine – New Kid On The Cake Block
Vission Bakery’s new sexy sister, located directly next door, takes you to cake heaven with hefty slices boasting quintessential American flavours. Think Carrot cake, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Oreo Cheesecake and Key Lime Pie. A Sassy favourite is the Coconut Pineapple Cake, perhaps inspired by NYC Magnolia Bakery’s hummingbird cake. Their signature Pistachio Log caters more to Hong Kong tastebuds and is utterly delicious, a perfect blend of soft and crunchy textures with the blueberry centre adding zest to the decadent, nutty icing.

Crewkies – Hong Kong’s First DIY Cookie Bar
The fun factor is high with this latest addition to Hong Kong’s cookie scene, with the option to customise your own creations with the toppings of your choice at the shop. You can also personalise a cookie box for a chance to try all the classic American flavours like Carrot Cake, Red Velvet, Funfetti, Brookie (lovechild of brownie and cookie). The cookies can be made cake-sized for parties, but there are also actual cakes (Ultimate Cookie Dough Cake being the way to go, and would be perfection with just a smidge more cookie dough, in our humble opinion) not to mention frozen cookie dough and DIY cookie sets for a treat at home.
Sassy Tip: Their coffee is worth making a stop for too. The ladies are lovely, and people are always chatting outside if you’re after a friendly vibe!

Hole Foods – Hands-Down The Best Donuts In Town
We loved seeing this local brand evolve from a kitchen space on Stanley Street (IYKYK) to its brand spanking new ground floor shop front. Hole Foods has filled a serious hole (we’re so punny) in Hong Kong’s lacklustre donut offerings. The Sassy Team has strong feelings about their donut holes, which have been described as “if Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts had a baby”. Their core range of flavours include US classics like lemon glaze, vanilla custard and raspberry jam, while monthly flavours tend to be Asian-inspired, such as pandan and condensed milk. Wash them down with their equally indulgent tiramisu latte (complete with lady finger for dipping) which is also a winner in our book.

Cookie Department – An American Take On Breakfast, Lunch and Dessert
While this 852 concept has grown to include brunch and even savoury items, Cookie Department’s oversized US-style cookies are what landed them on the map as one of the city’s first home-style cookies, crispy on the outside and gooey in the middle. Special flavours are often American-inspired like Lemon Crinkle and Brownie-Filled Chocolate Chip, in addition to season-specific pumpkin tarts. Today it’s a Sassy go-to for their brekkie offerings like the simple-yet-stellar blueberry pancakes, and we’re looking forward to trying their version of the McGriddle.

Taitaipiepies – A Taste of American Holiday Faves Year-Round
If you don’t want to wait until Thanksgiving and Christmas to savour American holiday treats, Taitaipiepies in Great Food Hall in Pacific Place serves them up daily (with the exception of the seasonal pumpkin pie). Despite their name being a clever nod to Hong Kong, the desserts here are distinctly American. From the All-American Apple Pie, to our personal fave Wholly Heavens Pecan (also comes in a chocolate iteration), the best part is that they come in a variety of sizes — so you can treat yourself to a bite-sized one while doing your weekly shop. While the Red Velvet Cake comes highly recommended, give the Not For Rabbits Carrot Cake a miss, which looks better than it tastes.

The self-taught mother-and-son baking duo are the ultimate Hong Kong success story, garnering the attention of luxury brands who commission aesthetic delights for corporate events. Their American-style cupcakes come in every flavour under the sun, including unusual ones like S’mores, Fruit Loops, hot fudge sundae and toffee apple. Cookie flavours are more classic – oatmeal raisin, birthday cake confetti and peanut butter. Consider Peanut Butter N Jelly, Cookies N Cream or Caramel Popcorn cakes for your next celebration.
