A stunning multi-cultural wedding in Scotland

This month we’re featuring one of the most beautiful weddings I think I’ve ever seen (and I’m not being biased because I went to school with the Bride here in Hong Kong!). Kimberly and Dominic planned their own wedding at Mansfield Traquair, an incredible heritage venue in Edinburgh, Scotland.

From the floor to ceiling fairy lights and the specially designed invites, to the Chinese tea ceremony and lion dance, this wedding was truly out of this world. Born and raised right here in Hong Kong, we love the way that Kimberly incorporated traditions from her hometown with her now husband’s… check out this gorgeous wedding below.

All love stories have to begin somewhere. How did you two meet?

We met in Hong Kong through some mutual friends. Dominic was visiting from Scotland and I was visiting from the US. We just kind of fell into a long distance relationship after that summer. I eventually moved to Scotland after three years of long distance!

Where was your first date?

Our first date was at this cute corner café in New Town, Edinburgh. We’ve been going back there regularly ever since my first visit to Scotland. When I finally moved over to Scotland, we made sure that we were living in close proximity to Café Marlayne! We went there so often that it was only fitting we had our wedding pictures taken there too!

Can you tell us about the first time he said he loved you?

All I’ll say is… he said it first!

Every bride has a proposal story. What’s yours?

No romantic proposal here…

Tell us about the ring.

We picked the ring out together when we were on holiday in Maui! The ring is a classic Tiffany Harmony eternity band.

What did you do for your hen party?

I flew back to Hong Kong for an impromptu 5-day trip! My cousin (maid of honour) threw an intimate dinner at Sevva complete with beautiful floral decoration, phallus shaped straws and bunny ears! After dinner, my friends arranged for a fun and tipsy evening at a hidden speakeasy bar in LKF.

On top of all this, my cousin also arranged for a lovely dinner in London with my friends in the UK. We even made a side trip to Spain for the weekend too!

How did you go about planning your wedding? Did you go the DIY route or did you hire a wedding planner to help you out?

Dominic and I decided to plan the wedding ourselves. We enlisted our talented friend, Jenny Tillyer, to design the menu and invitations.

Who helped you create your perfect day?

There wasn’t just one person who helped made the wedding so amazing – it really was a team effort from family, friends and vendors!

wedding dress

Tell us about the dress(es).

I had three dresses, each dress made from a different part of the world that holds a special place for me. My first dress was from the US, it was an ivory and embroidered off the shoulder Reem Acra dress with a lovely flowy skirt that made it perfect for the ceremony. To complete the look, I paired it with a long veil, a simple pearl headpiece, pearl earrings and my grandmother’s diamond watch.

For my second dress, I wore a traditional Chinese Kua that was brought over from Hong Kong. It had intricate silver, red, and gold embroideries throughout the dress. As for jewellery, I wore a mixture of jade, gold bangles, and emerald as it is symbolic in Chinese weddings!

Lastly, I picked a gold and platinum beaded evening dress for the dinner and dancing! The dress was from the UK designer, Jenny Packham, which had her signature vintage-y design that went well with our wedding theme. I absolutely loved dancing in this dress as it didn’t have a train for me to step on! To top it all off, I wore some Nike trainers to make sure I was not getting any blisters from the dancing!

Who helped you look and feel your best on your big day?

I can’t thank my cousin (MOH) enough for attending all those makeup courses and trials before doing our makeup for the wedding!

What do you remember most about the entire experience?

Dominic’s speech. It was the first time I’ve ever seen him tear up and all of our guests were there to witness it too!

Is there anything you would have liked to do differently?

I would’ve liked to have had more sleep before the wedding weekend!
