The T-Hotel

21 December, 2010

I am excited to tell you about this hotel because it is one of those little gems that you just don’t stumble across on your own.

The T-Hotel is located in Pokfulam and it is a spot where hospitality students from VTC (Vocational Training Council) train during their last month of school. The entire hotel is run by the students and everything is their responsibility from reception, housekeeping and reservations. The staff changes every month which means everyone is very eager to learn the ropes of their new job but it also means that those who stay may need to check in with a high dose of patience too.

I recently had a lovely afternoon visiting the hotel and I was in awe of how great a spot the place was and how enthusiastic the students were in making sure I was comfortable on my visit. T-Hotel is situated right off of Pokfulam Road and from the outside it doesn’t look like your typical hotel but upon stepping into the lobby you feel like you are arriving at any other hotel setting (except you are not paying insane hotel prices – more on that later!).

The rooms are a great size and they offer two choices of views. The first one is overlooking the water and the second one looks out to a Chinese village which creates a nice contrast between the swanky room and the colourful roofs of the old village. They had pretty much all the amenities I would need in either a personal stay or a business one and the hotel even has a gym for those who can’t refrain from their regular workout schedule when traveling.

Since this operates as a regular hotel you also have the lounge and bar area where you can relax after a long day sightseeing or a crazy day in the office. They are also planning on opening a training spa soon so my fingers are crossed that this is something that is also open to hotel guests.

We all pretty much live in tiny apartments here in Hong Kong so I think T-Hotel is the perfect choice when you have out of town guests that exceed the amount of space you have in your pad. The rooms are very affordable ($780-$880 until 31 March!!) and the hotel is only a short cab or taxi ride away from Central so it isn’t completely out of the way. From now until 15 January the hotel is offering a soft opening rate of $550 a night which includes 2 breakfasts. This special rate is limited to 10 rooms per night so booking early is highly recommended.

The hotel is also home to TDS which is the English Speaking Dining Society and this is where the students who are training to be wait staff come to learn. For $888 a year you can become a member and eat at the Chinese or Western restaurants for extremely affordable prices. If you are a hotel guest you are also able to eat in TDS and during my visit we dined on a fabulous 4-course Chinese meal which cost $110HKD. Everything was made by the students and the wait staff was so attentive during our entire lunch.

A special thanks to Sassy member Fay who told us about this secret find!
