Sassy’s Best Summer Beauty DIY Recipes

8 August, 2012

Weโ€™re well and truly in the midst of another sweltering Hong Kong summer โ€“ the season of bikinis, BBQs, beach parties, sandals and short shorts! All this midriff baring attire may have you breaking the bank on spa treatments, but have no fearโ€ฆ Sassy is here! Stay a beach babe from head-to-toe all season long without breaking the banks thanks to our top 3 simple and inexpensive D.I.Y summer beauty recipes โ€“ all of which you can find right in your own kitchen!

Kiwi & Honey Exfoliating Face Mask
The contrast of Hong Kongโ€™s summer outdoor humidity and freezing indoor air-conditioning can leave your skin dull and dry. Kiwi is a super fruit packed with free-radical fighting antioxidants and Vitamin C guaranteed to revitalize the skin. Mixed together with the ultra hydrating and antiseptic honey, this mask will leave your face supple and soft.

–ย ย ย ย ย ย  ยฝ a kiwi (smashed up)
–ย ย ย ย ย ย  1 tablespoon of honey

Directions: Mix the two ingredients together and apply liberally on your face! Let sit for ten minutes and rinse off with warm water.

Sassy Tip: If your skin is extra dry, mix in a tablespoon of plain yogurt for added moisture!

P.S. In need of a spot of additional honey pampering? Check out our review of the new APIVITA Golden Honey spa journey at The Oriental Spa in The Landmark Mandarin Oriental here!

Extra Virgin Coconut Oil Hair Mask
Extra virgin coconut oil is extracted from coconut milk with little to no heat, thus preserving all its natural benefits. It is extremely moisturising due to its high content of Vitamin E; you can find coconut oil at most health food shops across town.

–ย ย ย ย ย ย  5 tablespoons of coconut oil (for shoulder length hair)

Directions: Dampen your hair and then soak it in the coconut oil. Wrap your head in plastic film (or a plastic bag is fine) for up to 1 hour. Shampoo and condition as usual to rinse out. Et voila! Sassy beach babe hair is all yours.

Sassy Tip: For extra moisture, add in a smashed banana. For extra shine, add in a squeeze of lemon or splash of apple cider vinegar.

Brown Sugar & Spice (โ€˜n Everything Nice!) Body Scrub

–ย ย ย ย ย ย  1 cup of pure cane sugar (or any kind you have, I prefer the texture of pure cane or brown sugar)
–ย ย ย ย ย ย  1 and a half tablespoons of honey
–ย ย ย ย ย ย  3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil (you can also use coconut oil, jojoba oil, almond oil etc)
–ย ย ย ย ย ย  Your favourite essential oils โ€“ I chose lavender & bergamot (optional)
–ย ย ย ย ย ย  An airtight container; this will last up to 1 month if properly stored

Directions: Mix everything together and apply on wet skin in shower. Rinse off and no moisturiser is needed afterwards.ย  This is the perfect exfoliator to use before you head out to the beach.

Sassy Tip: Be careful in the showerย โ€“ the scrub tends to make the floor a bitย slippery, so be sure to give it a good rinse after using this scrubโ€ฆ that is unless you want revenge on your flat mate!

As with all natural D.I.Y recipes, remember to do a skin test if you are not sure if you may be allergic/sensitive to any of the ingredients. Please consult your dermatologist if you have any uncertainties.

So ladies, treat yourselves to some guilt-free pampering this summer with these super fun and easy D.I.Y beauty recipes to stay smooth, supple, sexy and sassy all season!
