Po’s Atelier in Sheung Wan – manna from heaven for bread heads

In a gorgeous little corner of Sheung Wan, just up from trendy Tai Ping Shan Street or a short hop down from Caine Road, a bakery with a difference has opened – Po’s Atelier.

The first thing you’ll notice on approaching is the stylishly minimalist exterior, with its white-walled terrace with matte black cafe chairs and tables… and the second thing you’ll notice is the gorgeous wafting aroma of freshly baked bread! Step straight into the bakery (the Po’s Atelier part) to grab your loaf to go, or head around to Deadend Café at the back if you’d rather linger over a latte.

Po’s Atelier is the uber-chic creation of self-proclaimed ‘bread fiends”, art director and photographer Vincent Cheng and Jonathan Leijonhufvud, partnering with famed Japanese baker and chef, Masami Asano. Their pared-back top quality French-Japanese products are free of any chemical additives, nasties or preservatives, so you need to grab them fresh on-site each day! With goodies like Oolong fig bread, Pain de Campagne and Bagel Maricot coming out of the ovens, we bet they won’t stay on the shelves long. There’s even one bread called Madame Cheng, named after Vincent’s mother, that incorporates her own homemade soy milk!

Café Deadend is currently in its soft-opening period and will offer a full menu from the middle of October.
