JOYCE SS13 – what’s in for spring (and how to get the look for less!)

12 April, 2013

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping… and there are occasional sudden downpours. Yes, it must be spring in the Kong! With all these changes in the air, I feel a change to the wardrobe is necessary too. Now that we have all cleaned out our closets and prepped our base with the lingerie necessities, we can start fresh with a whole new crop of trends!

Recently, JOYCE invited us to stop by and get a sneaky peek of what will soon be (and in some cases already are!) hanging on their racks. We combed through row after row of the most delicious brands to bring you this SS13 trend guide to inspire your shopping adventures ahead.

Our goal is to excite you with the Joyce-approved designer trends – and then show you a few more affordable ways to incorporate them into your wardrobe. By all means, splurge on a piece or two of the luxe list but also be shopper savvy with the trends that may only last a season or two! Here goes…

MONOCHROME

First up is one trend to splurge on – black and white are the ultimate basics, baby! Season after season, year after year, you can pair these puppies with everything from the bold to the pale. This year, black and white were everywhere, creating stripes and checks and graphics galore, like this cool Christopher Kane dress from JOYCE above.

You can’t go wrong sporting a striped piece this year, and the best part is that you can score one for every price point (Zara and ASOS are good starting points). Try pairing your geometric find with a fun floral or bold hue for added fun!

Top to bottom: Marni, Alexander Wang, Rick Owens

LEATHER

Now you may think the skins are only for the colder months but think again! Designers have reworked our summer staples with loose cut leather to breathe new life into a winter warmer. Plus, come fall, just layer these over tights or a sweater for added wearability. You savvy shopper… you really know how to get bang for your buck!

Rick Owens at JOYCE is always a designer leather fave but the high street is stuffed full of great finds too; we’ve pulled out just a small taster of what’s available from ASOS, Monki and Shopbop.

MESH

Things are getting a bit sheer over here with the recent addition of mesh on the runways – so you’d better make sure to keep things toned underneath (a good reason to check out one of these hot new workouts perhaps!). For those of you are that ready to play peek-a-boo, then try these black and white dresses by Stella McCartney and Lanvin from JOYCE on for size.

If you want to cover up a touch more and save a little pocket change for a rainy day, then try out these pretty pieces from ASOS and Shopbop (and save even more thanks to their free shipping!).

LACE

If you remember the 80s New Wave band Modern English, you’ll know it’s always mesh AND lace! With that said, I bring you our next trend… lace, of course! This flirty girly staple always seems to wind its way back around; the pencil skirt version from Giambattista Valli would be perfectly office acceptable with a button-down shirt and could easily transition to weekend wear with a slouchy sweatshirt and neon necklace.

I also love this shift dress from What the Frock (available at Polkadot Boutique), whilst you can get the best of both worlds with this leather lace and very luxe top from Lover at Shopbop!

FLORALS

The April showers that are sure to come will hopefully bring May flowers… and what is spring without flowers?! If for some reason this old saying doesn’t sprout, then surround yourself with blooms of another kind – the fabric kind!

Everything from pants to party dresses are in full bloom this year and we predict things will stay that way well into summer. We loved the über girly garden frocks from the likes of Oscar de la Renta and Marni at JOYCE, but these floral numbers from ASOS and Maurie & Eve do the job just as nicely. Look out for quirky fun floral trousers at Uniqlo, Club Monaco and H&M too.

TRIBAL

No matter where you hail from, you can still go tribal. This is one fun print to power you through this summer; be it an ikat, a ganado, a batik, or a chinle,  (learn the difference here), one thing is certain – you are sure to stand out!

Left to right: ASOS Statement Jacket with Embroidered Sleeves, H&M Skirt, Maurie & Eve Amazonite Cut-Out Dress

Not for the faint of heart, these prints mean business and get you noticed in the best of ways – with the likes of Peter Pilotto and Mary Katrantzou proving masters of the print at JOYCE. You can try a little or a lot but no matter how much you wear, you will be right on trend!

***

Now that you have had a visual feast, it’s time to head out to the shops or click on to your fave sites to sate your fashion appetite. Trends change all the time and SS13 fashion is all about fun! Prints, colours and textures are dominating the spreads of the mags, so take a chance and don’t be afraid to try something new.

As I mentioned before, you can start small with a fun accessory and when you have mastered that, move up to a skirt or blouse and then a full on matchy-matchy shorts suit or maxi dress. Whether you’re splurging at JOYCE or saving at Zara, there have never been more options – so the choice is yours!
