Abercrombie & Fitch opens in Hong Kong!

NEWSFLASH: We’ve just heard that Abercrombie & Fitch Hong Kong (Pedder Building, Central) will be opening on August 11, 2012 at 11am… and apparently they will be bringing 100 A&F hotties (see teaser image above for an example!) from all over the world to celebrate!

Also the first 50 fans in line for the opening (who are over 18 years old) will receive a free limited-edition hardcover A&F Quarterly, featuring their iconic photos shot by Bruce Weber. There are only 500 copies of this keepsake available, exclusive to HK; the rest will be handed out on a first-come-first-serve basis with purchases over $5000.

Meanwhile, the store itself is four floors of Abercrombie goodness (and fans of the Pedder Building will be pleased to hear that they’ve kept most of the traditional decor) – complete with pumping music, gorgeous shop assistants and that signature Abercrombie scent. So far, we’re loving their super comfy jeggings ($800), cosy sweaters ($6-800), cotton tees ($250-300) and cute dresses ($7-800).

So who’s excited? Either by the prospect of buying Abercrombie & Fitch clothes… or simply having your photo taken with the half-naked A&F boys?!

It seems to be the very nature of Hong Kong that the international high street brands I’d love to see arrive on our streets (Urban Outfitters, Topshop, Anthropologie) never materialize, and ones I’d never even considered would have an interest in the market here keep pouring in. Hot on the heels of American Eagle comes Abercrombie & Fitch, known to Brits like me mostly for their super-hot advertisements and rather yawnsome clothes. I mean, I’m all for great quality basics, but how many shops do we really need that can sell us a great tank? To make the matter sadder in my mind, A&F will actually be replacing beloved, iconic, Shanghai Tang in their Pedder Street location (reportedly paying 7 million dollars in rent), stripping another little piece of soul from this fab little stretch which once was also home to the inimitable On Pedder. We’ll definitely mourn the loss of Shanghai Tang hugely – that store is just so beautiful that we hope A&F won’t gut the whole place but rather work sympathetically with the old woodwork and tiled floors.

Ho hum, on to the next eh? Seeing as change is inevitable, we took a quick squizz at Abercrombie’s website to see if we can pick out any reasons to get excited (other than the naked torsos that is)…

I’d probably be tempted by this classic light khaki jacket to sling on for the rainy season – it’s pretty timeless and I appreciate the waist-cinching string tie. It doesn’t rock my world, but that’s not really what we’re looking for from a basic, is it? USD90… phew. That means in Hong Kong pricing they’ll probably add 50%, so we’re not looking at cheap from A&F.

Now the idea of A&F jeans is far more appealing – after all, we don’t really have many high-street-priced stores that do jeans well. If you’re not the right shape for Zara jeans (and if you have a butt then you probably won’t be), you’re left with mostly just designer brands. A&F’s Brett Super Skinnies look very promising indeed, and at USD88 the price is right. They look to have some cute yoga-type pants too (sadly with “Abercrombie” written across the butt). Skirts are generally super-short and flouncy of the type that will probably be more attractive to HK’s teen market.

There is one item we’ll definitely be stocking up on here at Sassy, the “Maura” tee! This deep v-neck is a wardrobe staple, and I’m sure we won’t be able to resist given its namesake.

In general, we’re cautiously optimistic about the new American influx… just also crossing our fingers for some of our “wishlist” brands to also arrive!

Do you know when the store is coming to Hong Kong?
As well as the other stores from the US such as Gap and Forever 21…etc.

  2. Hester says:

Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be an exact date yet! We’ll let you know when we find out…

  3. Rach says:

Yeah, I swung by that Shanghai Tang expecting to see it looking set to move out but no sign of it setting ship anytime soon!

I believe Forever 21 is going to open around August in Causeway Bay. The impression I got was that Gap would be opening in that building that is still being constructed in Central but I might be wrong! Meanwhile, we’ve now got American Eagle, plus Hollister going to open in Festival Walk – when will Topshop get the message?!?!

  4. Lovernotfighter says:

I would die if they hire the locals as Abercrombie boys! Slim pickings. They would have to import them

  5. Edith Yeung says:

I found that the A&F Shop will be opening at Festival Walk…but any idea of the opening date??

Hollister is opening on Aug 18 at Festival Walk, we’ll have to wait next year for A&F at Pedder bldg.
Gap is opening in November though!

  10. Raymond says:

I think A&F is opening this year probably mid to late Aug in the Central just opposite LV along Pedder Street.
where Shanghai Tang used to be there (now it moved to Tsim Sha Tsui)

Hollister is opening at Festival Walk which is true as I just walked pass its door tonight.

  11. Raymond says:

I probably messed up the opening time of A&F with that of Hollister.
    A&F might open later.

  13. eva tente says:

    hester,
as much as I am a “fan” and looking forward to A&F coming to hkg ( not because of the se naked young porn-stars they do their add with )… your are SO RIGHT !! what is happening to hong kong ?? how much more casual overpriced casual “mist” do we still need in our wardrobes ?? what is happening to central ? and : MOST importantly : where is SHT moving to exactly ?
very happy on the one hand… and I also can’t wait for the shop to open. but on the other hand, news like these make me really sad. hong kong and heritage conservation are two things that simply don’t go together ( or only if there is a lot of money involved ).
thanks for looking at this hysterical news so critically while everybody else is – like always – just taking out their wallet to get their credit card ready.
forgive me for my open words, thats just how I feel
    cheers,
    eva

Its very funny how no one cares that an iconic store that had a custom tailor shop with beautiful fabrics has been lost.
Everyone just wants to buy cheap american shit.
    ……
    This world amazes me.

  15. vallentina says:

so….. any idea of where and when A&F is gonna open in hong kong!!!!!!!!!!????????????????

Yes, anyone know when Abercrobie and Fitch will open in Hong Kong, even an estimate?

  17. Sarah says:

A&F is American but it is NOT cheap unless you buy it at the Ladies Market. There is so much fake A&F in HK WHY would ANYONE bother buying the real thing at 10 times the price? Crazy!!!

  18. Vince says:

Saw a&f in Shenzhen just opened these few days.

  19. Melody says:

Can we order Abercrombie from Hollister Hong Kong Shop?

  20. Cherie says:

No melody, we can’t order Abercrombie from Hollister shop. Anyone know when A&F will open in Hong Kong? I’m desperate!!

  21. Judy says:

Can’t stand Hollister , Gap and A&F here in Hong Kong. Yet, I can’t seem to not walk into their shops as I’m a bit of a nostalgist and it reminds me of home.

Like you said though, wish Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters would open here and maybe even Banana Republic.
